Frequently asked questions.
Before your infusion.
Do I need a consultation before the infusion?
Yes, the consultation is an essential part of the iron infusion. During the consultation we review your blood tests and symptoms in detail within the context of your full medical history.
We aim to identify and explain the reasons for your deficiency as well as devise a long-term plan to both prolong the benefits of the infusion and prevent it happening again.
We discuss your treatment expectations, potential side effects and answer any of your questions. This is all to ensure your safety.
If I have a consultation and infusion together, is this the same price?
Yes. We offer a one-stop option for convenience.
You will receive an information leaflet and list of side effects to read before and we will cover everything that would be discussed in a separate consultation.
How much does it cost?
Please see our pricing page for information on our prices.
Do you treat patients with medical insurance?
Yes, we have treatment packages with some insurance providers, and several others will cover full cost of treatment depending on your level of cover.
We recommend you discuss with your medical insurance provider in advance as we will need prior authorisation from them before treatment.
I am taking oral iron tablets. Do I need to stop them before the infusion?
Yes, you no longer need to take them.
The infusion will replace your iron stores. It does not affect having the infusion if you have continued taking them.
In your consultation, we will discuss ongoing future monitoring of iron stores which may include taking oral iron to prolong the benefits of your infusion.
Is there an age restriction for iron infusions?
There is no upper age limit for iron infusions however, unfortunately we cannot offer infusions to under 18yrs due to hospital age treatment limits.
Can I have an infusion if I am pregnant?
As we are unable to monitor your baby in our clinic we do not offer infusions if you are pregnant.
However, you may be eligible for an infusion on the NHS and should discuss this with your midwife as iron infusions can benefit both you and your baby.
We would be very happy to offer infusions after your baby has been born. We can offer consultations to support NHS treatment.
Can I have an infusion before or after cosmetic surgery?
Yes, this is not a contraindication to having an iron infusion.
Can I have an infusion if I feel unwell?
We would advise against an infusion if you have an active infection or are feeling unwell. Please contact our team and we can rebook for a future date.
Your treatment.
What iron formulation do you use?
There are two main formulations, ferric derisomaltose and ferric carboxymaltose. We have both options available and can discuss this in the consultation.
What dose of iron do I need?
The dose you require is individualised and calculated based on your weight, the cause and severity of your iron deficiency and maximum licensed dose recommendations.
We will discuss this at the consultation.
What is a standard dose of iron?
Most patients receive significant benefit from a standard dose of 1,000mg, however depending on your weight, the severity and cause of your deficiency, you may be offered a larger dose.
There is an additional charge for this. Please see our pricing page.
On the day.
Where do I find the clinic?
We are based at Tetbury Hospital. There is a free car park but allow time as it can be busy. There are free car parking options nearby in the town, e.g. Tetbury Goods Shed car park.
On arrival at the hospital, enter through the main entrance and you will find the outpatients waiting area on the left. We will meet you in the waiting area.
There are toilets, water cooler and vending machines available.
We now have a clinic at Minchinhampton Surgery, which has plenty of free parking and spacious waiting area with toilets.
How long does the one-stop infusion appointment take?
We advise to allow one hour for the consultation and infusion in one.
Can I drive after the infusion?
Yes, however some patients prefer a friend or relative to drive for them.
Can I return to work/daily activities straight away?
Yes.
After your infusion.
How long might potential side effects last?
Side effects can include flu-like symptoms, affecting only 10% of patients. Usually this resolves within 48 hours, however in rare cases this can last up to a week.
We are available to answer any questions post infusion if you have any concerns.
Can I exercise post infusion?
Yes. Some of our professional athletes attend for an iron infusion between training sessions. We recommend listening to your body and exercising accordingly.
Can I fly or go on holiday post infusion?
Yes, there are no contraindications to flying post infusion.
What is the average increase of ferritin levels after the infusion?
An infusion will restore your ferritin level (iron stores) however an exact figure cannot be given as it depends on many individual patient factors.
We can discuss this further in the consultation.
How long does an infusion last?
This depends on the cause and severity. Most patients only need one infusion however you may need another after 1-2 years, or a top-up within a year.
Will I need another infusion?
Depending on the cause of your deficiency, you may need another infusion after 1-2 years or a top-up within a year, however, in most cases a single infusion is sufficient.
