Why does iron matter?

An essential multifunctional mineral.

Iron is essential for much more than making haemoglobin.

When your body does not have enough iron, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Extreme crushing fatigue, feeling tired all the time
  • Reduced fitness and lack of energy
  • Insomnia or excessive sleeping
  • Hair loss
  • Irritability
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Depression, low mood
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Brittle or spoon-shaped nails
  • Difficulty concentrating (brain fog)
  • Restless leg syndrome and/or calf cramps
  • Tinnitus (ringing in your ears)
  • Increased frequency of infections
  • Cracks or ulcers in your mouth
  • Sore tongue and dry mouth
  • Pica (abnormal food cravings e.g. ice cubes, chalk, paper)
  • Noticeable heartbeats or palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Looking pale (anaemia: lack of red blood cells)

For some people, dietary changes or oral iron tablets are enough.

For others, oral iron may not be tolerated, may not be absorbed effectively, or may simply not replenish iron stores quickly enough.

What iron formulation do you use?

There are two main formulations, ferric derisomaltose and ferric carboxymaltose. We have both options available and can discuss this in the consultation.
